Julia + Dustin | Intimate Lifestyle Maternity Session

Do you ever get a feeling that something will work out even though you aren’t really SURE? I got this feeling last year when I kept seeing buzz about the workshop Emma Rose was hosting in South Bend, WA. I had followed her prior workshop and pretty much had the worst case of FOMO ever when she gave word that she would be hosting another fabulous workshop in her home town.  I talked to my husband and decided it was something I HAD to do…I can’t explain it, I just KNEW with all of my heart and soul that I needed to pull the trigger and go. So I made the decision to buy myself a big, fabulous early birthday present. A couple of minutes later, the photography workshop was happening, I was in, I was paid for, my heart was beating a million miles a minute, it was done. I would figure out childcare and lodging and missed work for my husband LATER (no big deal right?!)…which I totally did…I ended up bringing my whole crew with me to stay in the cutest Airbnb by the river and we basically made a mini family vacation out of the whole thing, sooo it was pretty much awesome in every single way.

During the 3-day workshop, I learned SO MUCH, my head was spinning from all of the information. Needless to say, it was one of the BEST decisions I have ever made for my career. I came away from that week feeling SO refreshed and inspired and ready to dive head first into the business of the photography world. One of the most unexpected things about investing in my education was that I gained lifetime friendships with fellow photographers from all over the country. These girls kept it real, we laughed and we talked about the tough stuff in both business and life. We covered it all. Emma was a complete open book and, over hot coffee (or mimosas!) each day, she poured her heart out to us about the ins and outs of the incredibly successful company she has built from the ground up in a very short time. She was candid about her triumphs, her goals, and mistakes, and she gave an intimate look ‘behind the scenes’ of running her business and I soaked it ALL in.

On the first day of the workshop, we were invited into Dustin and Julia’s gorgeous South Bend, WA home for a maternity lifestyle shoot. Their house was ideal for a photo shoot with it’s impressive water views, stunning light woodwork and floor to ceiling windows. We were all given free reign to direct these two and find our groove. It didn’t hurt a bit that Julia and Dustin were SO comfortable in front of the camera from the get-go, they were absolute naturals and I felt that all of the moments I captured between the two of them were completely genuine. The chemistry between them was so natural and intimate, I am incredibly grateful they invited us into their home. I follow Julia on Instagram and have enjoyed seeing photos of their adorable baby boy who arrived in September growing bigger by the day! I hope their little one gets to look back at these photos and see the beautiful connection between his parents and I hope it brings a big smile to his face!

I happen to now second shoot for Emma exclusively and I consider her a friend and a mentor, and I just love her to bits!
